In 1614 two years before he wrote the Gorin no sho (Book of the 5 Rings) Musashi wrote a work called “Thrity-five Instructions on Strategy”. It was written for Lord Hosokawa, by his guest Miyamoto Musashi. The Gorin no sho (Book of the 5 Rings) is considered a more elabora te piece off of this work.

To truly understand these teachings and the nature of this text is extremely difficult as Musashi used special terms and verbal meaning to express his respect for Lord Hosokawa, which is very hard to understand the exact meaning to translate into English.

In the translations I am using the terms that was used in the Gorin no sho (Book of the 5 Rings) as they are the more popular terms for identifying Miyamoto Musashi’s works.

STRATEGY NINE
(KNOWING THETHREE LEVELS OF STRATEGY)

Someone who adopts guard positions in strategy and displays different guard positions while handling the sword sometimes slowly, sometimes fast practices strategy of a low level. Someone who has refinement in strategy and who appears magnificent die to elegant bearing, practices at an intermediate level. The supreme strategy will appear neither strong nor weak; nether slow nor fast, neither magnificent nor bad, but broad, straight and calm. You should examine this well

(*note* in the test musashi uses the term “ge”, “chu” and “jo” when using these terms in expression, they are more than just low medium and high they also refer to level of skill or quality.)

STRATEGY TEN

(A GRADUATED CORD MEASURE)

You must always have a graduated cord measure in your mind. If you measure your opponent by adjusting the cord to him, you will be able to ascertain clearly his strengths and weakness, his straightness and crookedness, where he is relaxed and where he is tense. With this measure you must size up all aspects of your opponent – round, square, short, crooked or straight. You should examine this well.

STRATEGY ELEVEN

(THE PATHWAY OF THE SWORD)

Without knowing the pathway of the sword, you cannot handle it feely. You cannot properly slash you opponent if you put too much force into it, if you do not have a sense of the back and the side of the blade, if you shale the sword around like a knife or a spoon for serving rice. You must train in hitting you opponent well, always knowing the pathway of the sword and moving it calmly, following its weight.

Nude Art - Artistic Modeling - "Victim"

Many of you know that I am a model and also do “nude” modeling. The reason that I separate the modeling from the nude modeling as a description is because so many people have a problem with anyone that is nude.

Nude art is a work depicting the vision of an artist working with the human form naked. Be it paintings, photographs, or mixed media, the nude art is a term attempting to give an artistic depiction of a nude human form. Some of the earlier artists who used nude models for their art were Michelangelo, Botticelli and DaVinci.

Above is an artistic piece that was digitally enhanced to portray the artist expression. The name of the art work is called “Victim” . The original picture comes from “Artistic Expression; Book One” which can be found on Amazon.com

This is some of the video footage from our Eishin-ryu Kuden Event for the month of December 2011. In the training of this event we looked at the basic fundamentals of Japanese swordsmanship and the samurai method of iaijutsu.

Eishin-ryu Iaijutsu is one of the 7 Warrior Traditions of the Budo Ryu; School of the Warrior Way as the training goes in depth within the 7 traditions of the Budo Ryu Ninjutsu Dojo!

The Budo Ryu Ninjutsu Dojo is a school of traditional Japanese fighting arts and has established 22 schools world wide with its headquarters located in Kansas City, Ks.

The B.R.N.D trains in all areas of traditional Japanese bujutsu (old Japanese fighting arts). This includes hand to hand combat, grappling, ground fighting, all traditional weapons of the ninja and samurai, modern weapon applications and tactics, self-defense, self-protection, survival skills as well as mental and emotional conditioning.

STRATEGY EIGHT
(REGARDING STATE OF MIND)

The mind should be neither solemn nor agitated, neither pensive nor fearful; it should be straight and ample. This is the state of mind that should be sought after. The will should not be heavy, but the depth of ones awareness should be; in this way you make your mind like water that reacts appropriately to shifting situations. Whether it is a drop or an ocean with blue depths, it is water, you should examine this well.

STRATEGY SEVEN

(SIZING UP THE MA)

Different schools give different instructions on the way to assess the “ma”, but I find that they tend to fix or rigidify your strategy; that is why I advise you not to take into consideration what you have learned before.

Whatever the discipline may be, it is repeated exercises that you arrive at the point of being able to assess the “ma”. In general you should think that when your sword reaches your opponent, he can also reach you. When you want to kill an opponent, you have a tendency to forget your own body. You must reflect well on this.

Let us recall that “ma” is not exactly distance but is description of the space-time of a distance / relationship. “Ma” also refers to the action of the mind by which this spatial and temporal phenomenon is grasped.

(*Note, in this text Musashi is doubtless alluding to the habits acquired by Lord Hosokawa in the Yagyu-ryu*)

STRATEGY FOUR; (POSTURE) --- It is appropriate to hold the head neither lowered nor raised. The shoulders are neither raised nor contracted. The belly is forward but not the chest. The buttocks are not drawn in; the knees are not fixed. The posture of strategy should be well examined so that it also becomes one’s ordinary posture.

STRATEGY FIVE; (MOVEMENT OF THE FEET) --- To move from one place to another, you slightly raise your toes and push off from the heel, forcefully. According to the situation, you move your feet with a large or small step, slowing or rapidly, but always in the manner of walking. There are three ways of moving that is necessary to avoid: Jumping, Floating Steps and Heavy Stomping. The essential instruction related to moving from place to place is to alternate the movement of the two feet, positive foot then negative foot (In/Yo), which means you should not just move one foot. When you slash, when you back away, when you parry, you must always move the right and left feet alternately. You must never move only one foot. This should be examined with care.
(Note, this is the same as the Gorin no sho, in the scroll of water)

STRATEGY SIX; (THE WAY OF LOOKING) ---Your look must be broad and ample. Looking and seeing are two different things. Look powerfully, see gently. It is necessary to look at what is in the distance as well as something that is close; know that what is close is something that is of distance – this is essential for strategy. It is fundamental in strategy to know the sword of the adversary without looking at it. You must exercise well in this. Whether it is a matter of strategy on the individual scale or strategy on the large scale, the way of looking is the same. It is essential to look to both sides without moving your eyes. But without preparation, you will not be able to achieve this way of looking at the time of combat. This is why you had better study what I am writing here; you must accustom yourself to looking all the time in this way in order to be able to keep this way of looking in any situation. Examine this well.

STRATEGY ONE; (UNDERSTAND WHY) --- Among the people are sailors with rudders and oars as well as farmers with a spades and hoes. Each in his way succeeds in accustoming himself to his action. You too can acquire strength through regular exercise. Nonetheless, it is appropriate for each person to choose a sword that corresponds to his strength.

STRATEGY TWO; (KNOW THE WAY) --- The way is identical for a group strategy and for individual strategy. I am writing here about individual strategy, but it is appropriate to look at this towards group strategy as well. Keep in mind, the image of a general and its meaning. The limbs correspond to the vassals and the torso corresponds to the soldiers and people. It is thus that one must govern the country and ones own body, without having any imbalances. Nobody is strong and nobody is weak if he conceives of the body, from the head to the sole of the foot, as the unity in which living mind circulates everywhere equally.

STRATEGY THREE; (THE WAY OF HOLDING THE SWORD) --- Life and death exist for the sword as well as for the hand When you adopt a guard position or parry an attack, if you forget to slash you opponent, your hand is going to forget and essential dynamic and will become fixed. That is what is called a “dead hand”. A living hand is one that does not become fixed in a gesture. You will then be at ease with the possibility of slashing properly, since both the sword and the hand will be adapting flexibility to successive actions. I call that “living wrist”. The wrist must not have any slack; the elbow must not be too tense not too bent. A sword should be held with tension in the lower part of the arm muscles and relaxation in the upper part of these muscles. You should examine this well. *****

I hope that all of you have been good boys and girls all year and are having a great time with your family!

I know the picture is a little “naughty” but so am I (you all know that). For some reason, the pictures where I am showing a little bit of skin get WAY MORE VIEWS, than me wearing a kimono talking about the arts; so I wanted to make sure that I placed up something that would make you all click the image and hopefully read the message.

TAKING IT FROM THE REAR

Understanding a Rear Attack

Everyday I teach students kata and waza that has been passed down for centuries within the Nana Musha Den (7 Warrior Traditions of the Budo Ryu). I also stress that kata is a form of strategy and should not be looked at as law. One should look at the strategies and principals of the kata and then apply this to many other situations that can arise from any form of mental, physical or emotional attacks; this is the essence and truth of goshinjutsu.

When training with kata, one of the training drills that I have my students do is to execute the kata from all angles; from all 10 directions of the Happo-sabaki (4 directions (+), 4 directions (X), 2 directions (Tenchi / Heaven and Earth; Up and down).

The general rule of thumb in street survival that my father told me years ago is this, “It is what you don’t see, that will kill you”. Simply put; know your surroundings, understand the terrain and what can and cannot happen every time that you go somewhere. Know the shoes and clothing that you wear and how you can move in and out of them!

Ladies if you are like me, I wear high heels everywhere I go all of the time (yes I do, don’t judge me J) how fast can you get out of your heels, do you practice that? ; and if not why?; you should! I can pivot 180 degrees in platform high heels and get out of them to get my feet stable on the ground in less than a second; and even of you don’t wear heels all of the time, only on special occasions, you still should be able to do this, because a threat is not going to happen when you expect it! They are predators and you are their prey and when you let your guard down, that is when they will attack!

How many times do you see men that claim to teach woman’s self defense but do not teach the fact that most women do not wear the same types of clothing and footwear when they are out and about on the town or coming and going from work. This is so important as being able to move within your clothing that you wear and is extremely crucial when talking about rear attacks as most women’s clothing are more constrictive and our footwear does not aid in lateral movement.

This also goes to men as well who wear dress clothes and shoes while walking into an environment where the traction of those shoes does not aid well, such as a damp or wet concrete parking lot. More than likely the attacker has rubber gripping shoes and you will have to move in your clothing and footwear in that element. You guys also should place on some dress shoes and try this and understand how your body moves in this type of situation. Remember knowledge is very lightweight and you can take it anywhere; remember that.

But this article is not for woman’s self defense, or formal footwear; it is for all martial artist of all styles to know and understand that whatever art you are studying, to master it, you have to be able to take all of the kata and apply them from all directions, this is not just knowledge of the arts, this is wisdom within application!

I understand that “fights” will come from the front, as the attacker or opponent wants to beat you up. But life and death threats more than likely will not come from the front at all, they will blind side you, come from the rear and not only take all that you have, but take you along with them. If you enjoy looking into your children’s eyes and spending time with you family, than I suggest you do yourself and them a favor and learn how to take any attack from any direction!

Hope that this opens doors to all of you martial artist out there; remember there is no art better than another, find the one that you enjoy and the teacher that you trust and you will find the enlightenment that you seek in budo.

I love this quote, and it is how I live my life. Many times I get emails from people that are not students of the Budo Ryu that ask questions like; what does your students think about training with a woman? What do they think about your modeling and nude art? It is like you can feel that they want to make sure that they “fit in” or “agree on” the same things as the people here in the dojo. My only question to them is why? What do you think? That is all that matters.

I think they (my students here) see me more like another mom; you know? Honestly I think that they would all tell you that they do not think about any of those things because they never come up in training.

I know the world sees the modeling, the makeup, artistic nude photography, etc, etc. But I just be myself; not trying to impress anyone, just teach the arts in the hombu. I tell all of my kids, they need to live their life to be happy. Happiness is different for us all. They know that I love modeling, fashion, poetry, brush art, sports as well as artistic nude modeling / photography; it is part of who I am and what makes me happy. So they accept my hippie ass as part of who I am just as I accept all of what they do to make themselves happy as part of which they are. This too is a major lesson in budo, acceptance. Accept the fact that people are different, and even if they are not like you, accept that you cannot change that, and love them for who they are, not hate them for who they are not.

All of us look for self-empowerment, to be able to stand up and live our life the way that we want to be happy, but to do this you have to stay away from the things and people that are tearing you down and belittling your ambitions. Small people try to do that, but the really great ones are the ones that want to help you become what it is that you aspire to be, so do not surround yourself with people that are trying to tear you down, these people who are saying that it cannot be done, should not interrupt the ones that are doing it. Today live your life, don’t just be alive. There is a difference.

This morning I was getting ready, and my daughter asked me why I write a “to-do” list every morning when I drink my coffee. I told her because it helps me stay focused on the things that I need to do. She looked at me and shrugged; then went off to watch Phineas and Ferb.

The only way I feel to achieve constant progression is with the proper strategy. This is not just in war, but if life. Keep in mind I am saying “constant” progression, meaning you are succeeding in one area over a long period of time. To do this, I feel you have to devise the correct strategy and then carry out the smaller tasks so that you can then complete the larger objective.

Everyday I wake up; I make a to-do list. Even if some of the same things that I write on the list were on yesterday’s list; I write again, because today is today and what I need to get done is today; this also is part of understanding the principals of Shibumi-do (下味道).

In 1605 Miyamoto Musashi wrote The Hyodokyo (The Mirror of the Way of Strategy) was Miyamoto Musashi’s first piece of work. These 28 strategies I read and utilize all of the time in my daily objectives in all realms of life. These strategies written by Musashi was when he was between the ages of 21 and 24 (Two copies are extant still in the present day) and was his first written work on strategy, before the Gorin no sho (book of the 5 rings).

Clearly anyone reads this even if they do not have martial training, can understand that these are strategies of war. But a marital artist should read them as strategies of life. As you read them, understand we do not carry a sword, so what is the same meaning of all of the statements in the present day? How can we take these great strategies and apply them today? Everything has meaning, strategy, principals, study them, contemplate on them, and you will find the answer.

Fear (恐)

"When one has the feeling of dislike for evil, when one feels tranquil, one finds pleasure in listening to good teachings; when one has these feelings and appreciates them, one is free of fear." - Buddha

Fear is a wonderful lesson in the natural elements of IN & YO
(Ying & Yang in Chinese).

Fear is a distressing negative sensation induced by a perceived threat. It is a basic survival mechanism occurring in response to a specific stimulus, such as pain or the threat of danger. In short, fear is the ability to recognize danger leading to an urge to confront it or flee from it (also known as the fight-or-flight response) but in extreme cases of fear (terror) a freeze or paralysis response is possible.

For this reason alone you have to understand yourself and how to read the sanshin (mind, body & spirit) within. If you understand how to look inside yourself and understand why you are feeling a specific emotional response, this gives you a greater chance for survival as now you are listening to your inner feelings, and using an educated strategy based on experience to back up the emotional gut feeling by physical action. I preach this type of strategy daily at the Budo Ryu Hombu Dojo. This is how warriors have been training for centuries; finding ways to be able to connect the mind and the body together in balance.

Remember a warrior acts; only fools react.

Next time you feel something such as fear, anxiety, depression or sadness, do not just react to this feeling, as you are not in balance and more than likely do something that you might regret. Act to the emotion correctly, by using your mind in balance with the inner feeling. Developing the strategy needed to follow out the objective. This can be anything from a natural feeling of fear and love, to a daily goal all the way to military procedure.

This is why Budo is in everything that we do, it is who we are, and this is what separates us from the ones that simply read books on martial arts and think that they know; action from wisdom.

Miyamoto Musashi’s book of the five rings written in 1645 is divided into five volumes: Earth, Water, Fire, Wind and Void. Another, older Japanese document contains a volume entitled “Shinden Kohyo no Hikan” (Secret scroll of the divine tradition of tigers transformation), with five entries describing kamae / fighting attitudes: Crouching tiger, Raging tiger, Starving Tiger, Nursing Tiger and Thundering Tiger.

These are all collectively known as “Koteki Ryoda (dragons and tigers fighting) Juppo Sessho no jutsu” and are said to be the original forms of the kata found in Budo. The “Ryuko no Maki (dragon and tiger scrolls) are a later derivation.

The dragon scroll describes all things leading up to certain victory. The tiger scroll in contrast, describes what one needs to know about various phenomena, objects and people as well as things one needs to predict, sense, and see through. In other words the combination of the two great elements of the Dragon and Tiger having foresight and being certain of victory is seen to be an important aspect of Budo.

Martial artist who cannot develop this natural ability to predict, sense and see through things will never achieve the proverbial “100 victories in 100 fights” let alone “100 lives in 100 lights” (gaining enlightenment in each existence). This understanding of this philosophical method is found within the Tomo-ryu Hyakugata (戸猛流百型; 100 forms of death) which also takes on 5 manifestations within this collection of training.

The Tomo-ryu Hyakugata are based on the Happosabaki (8 directions + 2 ways of movement) this is also understood as 20 ways of movement as there has to be 10 ways of ura sabaki (inside movement) and 10 ways of omote sabaki (outside movement) that are influenced by the way that one feels the attack and then moves within the correct timing (taijutsu kimi ugoki).

It is important to understand that when I speak of the 100 ways of death, it is not killing the opponent (although that could very well happen); it is killing the warrior’s spirit (bushi-ki). If you can do this you can create confusion for the enemy very early in a fight, which will cause him / her to loose their confidence and thus take away the enemy's true bushi-ki. When you apply this you will not just take away the enemy’s balance, you will take away the enemy’s heart (kokoro).

If you look close enough within the photo you can see many IN / YO or YING / YANG contrasts within the photograph that directly go hand in hand with the lesson today of the “Koteki Ryoda (dragons and tigers fighting) Juppo Sessho no jutsu” and the understandings of Taisabaki (体捌き) found in the Tomo-ryu Hyakugata (戸猛流百型).

This is some of the video footage from our Togakure-ryu Ninpo Taijutsu Kuden Event for the month of November 2011.

In the training of this event we looked at the basic fundamentals of the Togakure-ryu in the areas of Ukemi Gata, Santo Tonko no Kata, Shinobi Gaeshi Gata and the Ninja Biken. We also trained in other areas as well such as Shinobi-iri, Shinobi ashi, Taisabaki, Metsubushi, Senban Shuriken and Shuko.

Togakure-ryu Ninpo Taijutsu is one of the 7 Warrior Traditions of the Budo Ryu; School of the Warrior Way as the training goes in depth within the 7 traditions of the Budo Ryu Ninjutsu Dojo!

The Budo Ryu is dedicated to teaching traditional samurai bujutsu and authentic ninjutsu. To do this the Budo Ryu has 7 Warrior Traditions that it teaches from:

Shibumi-do (下味道) The Way Towards Effortless Perfection

Inspiration is what people remember, not defamation. No one wants to go to the grave forgotten and the only way to be remembered is to inspire the ones around you.

Even if it is someone that you only met for a brief moment in your life, you can share with them the greatest moment in their life, just by a simple thank you, or a smile. To some, this changes their perception of the day.

There is this Japanese term called "Shibumi" (下味) which means effortless perfection. Kobayashi Sensei always told me that there is not such thing as perfection, and the better you get, the further your idea or perception of perfection is. he always used the term "Shibumi-do" or the "way of effortless perfection."

He said the he uses this term because no one can achieve perfection (Shibumi) they can only dedicate themselves towards the idea of it (thus the usage of the kanji "Do). But this in itself is a stagnant thought because this is not a moment of time, this is a philosophy that you have to dedicate to within your journey of life; so he always told me good luck in that journey (Shibumi-do).

Everyone wants to tell you what you can and cant do, but no one other than yourself knows what you are capable of. Dedicate yourself to the things that make you complete. Inspire the ones around you, to become better and if you know what you are worth, than go get it. No one is going to give it to you.

I hope that you understand my rambling thoughts this morning, it made sense to me as I wrote it.

Search for Historica Shurikenjutsu - 手裏剣術

Historical Ninja and Samurai researcher Antony Cummins is researching the origins of the historical shuriken. Where there is a problem is in all of the major text of ninjutsu; they do not mention that shuriken at all. The Bansenshukai, Ninpiden or the Shoninki has no mention of the use of shuriken at all.

So why is the shuriken attached to the ninja if it is not found in any of the historical text?
Can anyone help with any information on this topic?

"You and your opponent attack each other. At the moment when he blocks your sword, you close in on him and make your sword stick to his. You must glue your sword to his as though it were impossible to make it come unstuck, but without putting too much force into it. In making your movements stick, you can never be too calm. You must distinguish between sticking and becoming entangled. Sticking is strong, becoming entangled is weak."

"making your movements stick " (nebari o kakuru) the description here is a more simple version than the one written in the Gorin no sho (book of water) written 4 years later.

It is also needs to be understood that we do not carry the sword today, so our body is the sword or the weapon that we would use, so to understand this in the modern day, is to take these principals and apply them to you Taijutsu training. I hope that you all enjoyed today's lesson.

Size does not matter as Budo is not about brute strength. A well-trained Budoka can neutralize a much larger opponent, not by opposing his force, but by blending with the opponent’s energy to guide and controlling it.

You don't need to feel intimidated by the fact that others may prejudge you or assume you are in a weaker position, because if they are speaking in words, it is only a matter of perception which clearly they are not seeing the whole picture. A warrior knows this.

Those who are enlightened never stop forging themselves. This realizations of mastery cannot be expressed well in words.

The most perfect actions echo the patterns found in nature. Have you ever felt out of place? Maybe you were the "new kid" or "the young one" or simply the "outsider" because you felt that you did not fit in?

There is nothing in this universe that cannot be harmonized, just as others should not prejudge your position, neither should you; your position, see what it not seen, adopt to what is felt and flow naturally within the elements.

What matters is that you are prepared, ready, and fully listening—with your ears, eyes and heart.

This is some of the video footage from our Gyokko-ryu Kosshijutsu Kuden Event for the month of September 2011.

In the training of this event we looked at the basic fundamentals of the Kihon Happo as well as the Churyaku-no-maki scroll of the Gyokko-ryu school of Kosshijutsu.

Gyokko-ryu Kosshijutsu is one of the 7 Warrior Traditions of the Budo Ryu; School of the Warrior Way as the training goes in depth within the 7 traditions of the Budo Ryu Ninjutsu Dojo!

The Budo Ryu is dedicated to teaching traditional samurai bujutsu and authentic ninjutsu. To do this the Budo Ryu has 7 Warrior Traditions that it teaches from:

After class at the Budo Ryu Ninjutsu Hombu.

Yesterday's classes at the Hombu Dojo made me realize how lucky I am to be able to do what I love to do everyday and make a living at it. I mean that is everyone's dream isn't it? To be able to do what you love to do, express who you are to the world and make a living doing it? The unfortunate thing is that not many get this opportunity or maybe,... not many are willing to take the chance.

It was said once by Confucius "Choose a job that you love and you will never have to work a day in your life". He was right. I get the pleasure of everyday waking up and spending the rest of the day dedicated to the authentic ninjutsu and traditional samurai bujutsu and help teach the martial arts to the students of the Budo Ryu Ninjutsu Dojo.

Sure; there is work that has to be done; we make video downloads, shinobi no mono magazine, DVD's for the Ninjutsu Super Store, and uploads and updates to the Budo Ryu Online Dojo as well as keeping in contact with all of our students and supports with our myspace page, facebook page and youtube channel. The greatest part that I find with what I do is that I never get frustrated at all because of what I am doing, I always feel like I want to do more than what I have; and to me that is a good thing!

You only have one life to live, live it to be happy, and don't be scared to be yourself, that is what is going to really make you happy. Happiness starts within and then it is expressed outward. Just like art.

Shinobi Mumon no Ikkan - The Gateless Gate

If you pass through this barrier once,
You will walk independently in the universe."

The gateless gate is regarded as the greatest book of zen ever complied. It is a collection of 48 Chan (Zen) koans compiled in the early 13th century by the Chinese Zen master Wumen Hui-k'ai (無門慧開; 1183–1260).

This book was so profound even during the Sengoku Jidai (戦国時代); Samurai (侍)and Shinobi (忍び) families were reading these words as an aid towards enlightenment. In the Shoninki written by Natori Masatake of the Kishu-ryu school of Ninjutsu he writes:

"One of the most important things for you to do is always know everything you can of every place or province that is possible to know. When you are in that said province, be sure to read the feeling of the local people and do what is necessary according to the situation. If your mind is in total accordance with the "way" and understands reasoning and logic perfectly, than you can pass through the mumon no ikkan (The Gateless Gate; 無門關) "checkpoint". This is a mental place that is barrier without a gateway that exist inside your mind. You will be able to pass through this mental stage because you will have a clear mind and reasonable thinking due to your training." --- Natori Masatake; Kishu-ryu; Shoninki

BUDO RYU - Kodachi 小太刀, Shinobigatana 忍刀, Iaijutsu 居合術

In this training event we looked at the Kodachi (小太刀) or short sword fighting skills from the Tenjin-ryu (天神流) and the Tomo-ryu (戸猛流). We also looked at many of the kata from the Togakure-ryu Shinobigatana (戸隠流忍刀). Towards the end of the training session we looked at various methods of Iaijutsu (居合術) with the Kodachi (小太刀).

Here is the video promo of the 2011 Shinobi no Mono Stealth Camp! This is the 4th Annual Shinbobi Stealth Camp held by the Budo Ryu; School of the Warrior Wary. Headed by Soke; Anshu Christa Jacobson!

This shows some of the training that took place at the event, we did not place everything on this video promo, but enough for the viewers to capture the meaning and essence of the training!

In this video we use the music from " The Final Cut; Friday the 13th Movie 2009" as many of you know I was a music major and love the horror movies, mostly the music as it has so much depth with the transitions of the melody. That is why I choose this song as it has so much depth, so many things going on with the music, yet they all fit together to make this beautiful song. This was very symbolic of the training of the 2011 Shinobi no Mono Stealth Camp.

Ongyōjutsu (隠形術) – Disappearing Techniques (隠形術)

KANNON-GAKURE (God Hiding)

Ongyojutsu (隠形術) is the art of disappearing and hiding (or what others say "invisibility" techniques). When talking about this form of hiding, usually the techniques such as (1) Kitsune-gakure (2) Uzura-gakure (3) Kannon-gakure (4) Tanuki-gakure and (5) Ukigusa-gakure are just some of the hiding techniques that come to mind when talking about this forms of Ongyōjutsu (隠形術) within classical ninjutsu.

In the photo above I am teaching the technique "Kannon-gakure" (a.k.a God Hiding). This is done within a house or residence of the enemy where you are trying to gain or take vital information. However, the photo above is me demonstrating the principals of the technique during the 2011 shinobi no mono stealth camp.

When you are doing this you are to be walking within the hallway, or residence, you are also to be wearing dark colors and to be walking in the shadows of the hallway as well. When you sense that the enemy is walking near, you stay within the shadows and press your body up against the wall.

Cover your mouth with your sleeve of your jacket and breathe as little as possible, this is because when they walk by you, they are so close that they will be able to feel your breathe on them, so total concentration is needed!

Lower you face into your sleeve, and to a rhythm of your racing heart silently chant the following:

-- "On Ah Ni Chi Ma Ri Shi E I So Wa Ka" --

It's written that you have to say this "within" your mouth, which can be translated as saying this in your head. Clearly if you say it out loud they will spot you and then kill you. It is also said that this is the mantra that you say before you go on the mission, so that there is no need to say it when you are on a mission. However; the usage of this is key as it makes sense that you would say it when on the mission in your head to calm your nerves and anxiety that you are feeling as the man that wants to kill you is full armed and walking within inches of your body.

This is to be done wearing the classical shinobi garb (shinobi shōzoku 忍び装束) and also making use of the zukin (hood) as this will help aid cover the natural tones and silhouette of the human form. However this can also be done wearing dark colors as well and using one of the basic tools of the ninja the "sanjaku tengui".

In this photo above I was not wearing the shinobi shōzoku (忍び装束) but utilized what I had so that I could demonstrate the use of this technique to the students.

In the photo above I am teaching at the 2011 Shinobi Stealth camp the technique "Uzura-gakure" (a.k.a Quail Hiding). Usually this is done at night or right as it is getting dark so that you can use the shadows to your advantage.

When you are in a garden or area with natural foliage, wrap both of your arms over your head and crouch down like a quail shape ball to resemble a garden stone so that you would be over looked if someone gazed through the area.

This is to be done wearing classical shinobi garb (shinobi shōzoku 忍び装束) and also making use of the zukin (hood) as this will help aid cover the natural tones and silhouette of the human form. Shinobi-iri; Ko Ashi - Small Step

SHINOBI-IRI (忍び入り;stealth entering methods)
HOKOJUTSU (歩行術; art of walking techniques)
KO ASHI (小足;small step)

Ko Ashi (small step) this is part of "hokojutsu" (art of walking techniques) and also is trained and classified as "senkojutsu" (art of infiltrating walking techniques).

This is a small stabbing step that is used to move silently through shallow water, high grassy area or dry leaves. The objective of the technique is to get the foot beneath the surface without causing any unnatural noise.

Make sure that you maintain a low hip position keeping your hips pointed at the targeted position. As you step down, keep your toe pointed straight down and penetrate through the foliage and onto the surface. As your toes hit the ground, slightly lower your heal to the ground place your weight on that foot. From here, relax and move to the next step; this is ko-ashi.

Doton no jutsu: Literally "Earth Evasion". Includes such concepts as using rocks, soil and land contours to aid in the ninja infiltration, evasion and deception.

In this photo here I am demonstrating how the ninja would use soil to throw into the eyes of the enemy as a means of escape. As this does attack the eyes the waza would be part of the metsubushi (目潰し) or eye closers.

The two primary traditions within our school that details Kajutsu or "fire techniques" are Tomo Ryu Shinobijutsu and Togakure Ryu Ninpo Taijutsu.

In this video you will see that the Budo Ryu beaks down the kajutsu training into 3 areas:

Katon no jutsu (火遁之術) is the section that teacher - evasion, infiltration and deception.

Kayakujutsu (火薬術) is the section that teaches - firearms, explosives and gunpowder.

Kaki (火器) is the section that teaches "fire tools" these are tools that the ninja used on missions that aided them in the art of stealth and use fire, smoke, hot coals and ash.

MONOMI - Shinobi Hand Torch

When on a night mission within a residence or building, the Shinobi had a small hand torch that they used to be able to see within or to see into. This would help aid in "stealing in". It was small, easily concealable and just as easy to put out in case they felt they were seen.

Split a cedar board to get a piece of 4 or 5 Sun (12 or 15 cm). Apply a little sulphur on the tip and hold it out. This is called Monomi Scouting Torch and used by the shinobi to look inside a window or a knothole.

Goshiki Mai - Five Colored Rice of the Ninja

Secret Messages were conveyed with the use of elaborate codes that would be overlooked by anyone but the recipient. The ninja's ploy included rice grains dyed different colors (goshiki-mai) as well as knotted rope (yuinawa-moji) as well as letters that only their allies could understand.

In understanding the "Goshiki-mai" (Five-color rice) Rice grains were dyed blue, yellow, red, black or purple and arranged in different combinations or patterns. With this technique, the ninja could make over 100 different codes.

There is a new Historical Ninjutsu video being released this week on this topic from myself and Antony Cummins that you can all see and understand these old methods of secretly passing information.

2011 BUDO RYU DAIKOMYOUSAI 武道流大光明祭!

DAIKOUMYOSAI (大光明祭) means; celebration of illumination from inside to the outside -- The Budo Ryu holds and annual Daikomyosai every year.

Training goes in depth within the 7 traditions of the Budo Ryu Ninjutsu Dojo! Direct teachings of the history of the arts, classical kata as well as the present applications, deeper understandings of these 7 warrior traditions that make up the Budo Ryu - School of the Warrior Way!

The Budo Ryu Ninjutsu Dojo is a school of traditional Japanese fighting arts and has established 22 schools world wide with its headquarters located in Kansas City, Ks.

The B.R.N.D trains in all areas of traditional Japanese bujutsu (old Japanese fighting arts). This includes hand to hand combat, grappling, ground fighting, all traditional weapons of the ninja and samurai, modern weapon applications and tactics, self-defense, self-protection, survival skills as well as mental and emotional conditioning.

There is yojutsu and injutsu in ninjutsu.

YONIN (yojutsu / yoninjutsu) is infiltration when in plain view of the people, so you are dressed like them and moving in and out of the crowd. This is where the Shinobi Nanabake (ninja disguise) was used. Many say that Yonin is only done during the day and that is wrong. You can use this tactics day or night. Yoninjutsu; is for the very highly skilled ninja.

INNIN (Injutsu / Inninjutsu) is infiltration when you are not in plain view, you are staying in the shadows, not in the area of people at all, climbing on roof tops, staying in the shadows, staying in the rafters of the house to gather information, in this situation, your goal is to stay out of complete site of everyone, stay in the shadows and carry out the mission, this infiltration tactic is called Innin. Inninjutsu; is primarily used for the lower ranking ninja.

Yojutsu --- could be any kind of infiltration in plain view of the enemy, so the use of disguise to move through the crowd is a essential (i.e., shinobi nanabake, yamabushi, komuso, performers, fortune tellers, etc).

Injutsu --- is when the infiltration and information gathering is done completely unnoticed and in the shadows. So the classical black outfit, would be of use in this situation. For example, entering the enemy territory at night and hiding in the bushes during the day while observing the enemy's movements.

If you look at the 2nd row from the right you will see:
YO (陽) NIN (忍) JO (上)

YO (陽) Means; Positive or Light. Hence the training of Yo-jutsu being done in plain view ---

NIN (忍) In this case means Shinobi, or in modern term "Stealing in" ---

JO (上) Means; Top, Above, Upper. So this where the idea of this type of training being done by upper level shinobi comes from. ---

If you look at the 5th row from the right, a little over half way down you see:
Shinobi (忍) Iri (入)

This (忍入) is giving detail to the entering methods of the Shinobi, in many schools called "Shinobi-iri"

PURPOSE OF THE MARTIAL ARTS
(Taken from the upcoming book from the Budo Ryu Kai)

To understand the purpose of the martial arts training we have to understand the goal towards training; Self-Enlightenment, Self-Empowerment, Self-Defense and Self- Protection of oneself and loved ones.

I was once told of an old story of these two master swords man who were closer than brothers. They both mastered the way of the sword, and prepared to start their journey of Musha Shugyo (武者修行). They were going to be separate for many years. So they met one day on the opposite side of this creek, and they agreed that they would re-unite at the same place, at the same date, twelve years later.

Twelve years later, at that date they found that the rain and the course of nature had changed that creek to a large raging water stream so there is no way that they can meet at the exact same place. As one of the samurai determined to live up to his vow and to show his incredible level of skill that he amassed over the twelve years. He took a running jump and leaped over the deadly current of the rushing water, safely on the other side. The other samurai walked upstream and hired a boatman to get row him across safely to meet his close friend.

The skills that one man spent 12 years of training and refining was duplicated effortlessly with a few pennies. Similarly if your goal is only to “win” or “kill”, than we can just buy a gun rather than investing years of training. This is why students of Budo need to understand that Budo is not just about winning. Next we need to understand that winning is more than just defeating your enemy, it is about perfecting yourself – your personal character – as well as your skills as a martial artist.

In Eishin Ryu Iaijutsu (英信流居合術); one of the seven warrior traditions of the Budo Ryu, there is a saying: Kachi wa saya no naka ni ari (Victory comes while the sword is still in the scabbard) physical skills alone no matter how highly developed are not enough. There is always someone more skillful or someone with a dirty trick that will leave you unprepared. But attitude is better than aptitude in actual combat.

Without having a strong warrior spirit, courage and determination a high level of skill is useless. So the purpose of training in Budo is to develop the mind and spirit of a warrior and such a strength of character that it wins a battle before it begins. This takes years of training to do. These skills also lead to the ability to rid your self of and not respond to hate, slander, anger, fear, selfishness and jealousy as they are counter productive and self-destructive. Simply put frustration is the first sign of mental weakness. Those that get so frustrated that they have to say and do negative things are clearly mentally weak, and as a warrior and a practitioner of budo, you should not concern yourself with this action as this will also lead you off of true path of Budo.
